A question we sometimes get from our users is what is the difference between a plant items and batches? These terms are occasionally used interchangeably within the greenlife industry and are therefore sometimes confused with each other.

Using the EvergreenConnect nursery inventory management platform, we get our customers to think of an item as the parent and a batch as the child. Via this logic, you cannot have a child without a parent, therefore you cannot have a batch without an item.

My item is a Banksia integrifolia in a 45 litre bag: I produce a batch of 100 of these in March 2025, I then produce another batch of 150 of these in July 2025. In this example, both batches are produced from the same item, but they could be vastly different. At first glance it may appear that these batches would have different ready (or saleable) dates, as the March batch was produced four months before the July batch. But that may not actually be the case:

  • What if the March batch was potted from your own internal 200mm stock, that you originally struck from cuttings, then potted into 50mm tubes, before potting into these 200mm pots that you then bagged into 45 litre?
  • What if my July batch was bagged into 45 litre from 300mm stock that I had to purchase in from another grower?
  • How are the costings of each batch going to differ in these above scenarios?

At EvergreenConnect we have you covered, as our nursery inventory management system has been designed from the ground up to deal specifically with the greenlife industry. Our platform deals with your stock on a batch by batch basis, so we can provide end to end traceability (even across suppliers) and comprehensive costing analysis so you can focus on building efficiency in your production process.
