In a production nursery batch merging and batch splitting are essential nursery inventory management functions. They are used to maintain accurate stock records and optimise plant traceability. You are able to quickly record both batch splits and batch merges in the field using the EvergreenConnect App along with our QR code labels. Knowing when to use each method is critical for efficient operations.
Batch merging
Use this when two or more batches of the same plant variety and stage of growth are combined into a single group. This typically occurs when batches are of similar age, size, and quality, and are growing under the same conditions. For example, if two partial batches of Lomandra longifolia tube stock are ready for dispatch and are indistinguishable in quality and size, merging them simplifies stock management and reduces administrative overhead. Merging helps consolidate fragmented stock, making space management and future stocktakes easier.
However, merging should only be done when it won’t compromise traceability or biosecurity tracking. If batches have different provenance, treatment histories, ready weeks or health statuses, they should remain separate to maintain transparency and compliance.
Batch splitting
Batch splitting is appropriate when a single batch needs to be divided due to a change in status, location, or condition. This is common when a portion of a crop matures faster, is relocated to a different area of the nursery, or undergoes a separate treatment (e.g. hardening off, pruning, or chemical application). Splitting allows for precise tracking of inventory, ensuring accurate reporting and improved traceability.
For example, if 1,000 Callistemon viminalis in 140mm pots are split between two growing areas with different microclimates, batch splitting allows the nursery to manage and assess performance separately.
In summary, use batch merging to consolidate stock when conditions are uniform, and use batch splitting when conditions or statuses differ. Both practices improve inventory accuracy and support production decisions. They also help align with quality assurance protocols.
